Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) is a clonal disorder of the hematopoietic system with several subtypes. Treatment options include growth factors, such as recombinant human erythropoietin and thrombopoietin, as well as chemotherapeutic agents, including hypomethylating agents.
MDS is characterized by partial or complete suppression of blood cell production. The clinical manifestations depend on the degree of impairment in the respective blood cell line. Symptoms may include general weakness, dizziness, bleeding, bruising, and recurrent viral or bacterial infections. Allogeneic stem cell transplantation is also used as a treatment approach. All treatment modalities are available and applied at the Yeolyan Hematology and Oncology Center.
Statistics: The disease primarily affects adults and is most frequently diagnosed in individuals over 60 years of age.
Heredity: MDS is not an inherited condition; however, a hereditary predisposition plays a significant role in its development.
