History

The “Yeolyan” Hematology and Oncology Center of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Armenia is the country’s leading institution in the fields of hematology and oncology. It is a unique research and medical center in Armenia’s healthcare system with national and regional significance in hematology.

The history of the Center dates back to the 1930s, when, through the initiative of Professor A.A. Baghdasarov, a team of specialists arrived in Yerevan to promote the concept of blood donation and organize a blood transfusion service. In 1933, the Armenian branch of the Moscow Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion was established, led by the prominent scientist Ruben Yeolyan. Thanks to his efforts, a scientific and medical foundation was laid, upon which the entire future system would be built.

Starting in 1939, the institution operated as the Republican Blood Transfusion Station of Armenia. Blood transfusion departments were also opened in Leninakan (now Gyumri) under the leadership of S. Tovmasyan and in Kirovakan (now Vanadzor) under E. Aslanyan.

In 1947, by the decision of the Council of Ministers, the Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion was established in Yerevan. It became one of the five leading specialized centers in the Soviet Union, combining scientific research, clinical care, and methodological guidance within a single institution.

The Center Today

Over the years, the Center has broadened both the variety and volume of its services, extending into additional specialized areas.

Since 2019, the Pediatric Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Armenia has operated as part of the institution. This center was formed through the unification of the pediatric hematology and oncology services of the Prof. R.H. Yeolyan Hematology Center and the Chemotherapy Clinic of the Muratsan Hospital Complex of Yerevan State Medical University.

In May 2019, the Adult Oncology and Chemotherapy Clinic was launched, providing treatment for patients with malignant solid tumors.

As the center’s range of services and areas of expertise grew, a name change was introduced to better represent its broad and integrated profile. The “Prof. R.H. Yeolyan Hematology Center” was renamed the “Yeolyan” Hematology and Oncology Center of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Armenia.

Today, as one of the most vital healthcare institutions in the country, the “Yeolyan” Hematology and Oncology Center integrates science, professional expertise, and compassionate care.
