Pediatric Hematology and Chemotherapy Clinical Department

Since 1983, the Pediatric Hematology and Chemotherapy Clinical Department has been operating at the “Yeolyan” Hematology and Oncology Center. In 2019, the Pediatric Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Armenia was established within the institution. The center provides diagnosis and treatment for children aged 0 to 18 with malignant blood diseases and other hematological disorders.
The Pediatric Hematology and Chemotherapy Clinical Department is the only specialized center in Armenia offering comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for blood and hematopoietic system diseases, fully aligned with modern international clinical guidelines.
Each year, the department treats an average of 30 to 45 newly diagnosed leukemia patients. Among these, approximately 80% are diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), 18–20% with acute myeloblastic leukemia (AML), and 0–2% with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML).
Since 1987, treatment protocols have been based on the AUR program. From 1992 to 1993, the BFM (Berlin–Frankfurt–Münster) German program was introduced into clinical practice for the management of childhood acute leukemias. In 2013, the MB (Moscow/Berlin) protocol was also incorporated for the treatment of acute leukemias. These evidence-based programs achieve remission rates of 70–90%, with 5-year relapse-free survival ranging from 40–70%, depending on the type of leukemia. Upon completion of treatment, children remain under continuous follow-up by a multidisciplinary team to promptly identify and manage possible long-term complications of chemotherapy.
Leukemia treatment outcomes have significantly improved since the launch of the allogeneic transplantation program in 2021.
