Bone tumors develop within the bone tissue and, similar to soft tissue tumors, can be benign or malignant.
Benign tumors: The most common benign bone tumors are osteochondroma (a cartilage–bone tumor) and enchondroma (a cartilage tumor). These tumors usually do not spread and are often detected incidentally.
Malignant tumors: Malignant bone tumors are classified into two main categories: primary (originating directly from bone tissue) and secondary (metastatic, originating from cancers in other organs).
Examples of primary bone tumors include osteosarcoma and Ewing’s sarcoma, which most frequently occur in children and young adults.
Typical symptoms of bone tumors include persistent pain — often more intense at night — a palpable hard mass or swelling, restricted movement, functional impairment of the affected limb, and, in some cases, fever, weight loss, or fatigue.
Diagnosis usually begins with a physical examination and X-ray imaging. To obtain more detailed information, additional studies such as computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and biopsy are performed.
Treatment depends on the tumor type, size, and extent of disease and may include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.
